When I started to be aware of the things surrounding me, I also started to care about the environment. I believe that Mother Earth deserves our care. Though I was not an avid advocate who devotedly spent my time in volunteering, I subconsciously do things to contribute to Mother Earth’s welfare. I started throwing trash in proper places, turning off the lights when they are not in use, not burning plastic bags and many others.

In 2009, I was introduced to Earth Hour. I believed that their cause is worth it. I started observing it that year with my family and every year thereafter. It was made into a family event. I also used it as an opportunity to share to my kids how to love Mother Earth and take care of it in their own little ways.

Though I wasn’t able to spend Earth Hour with my kids this year, I was able to observe it still. I went to the Habagat Earth Hour Night Ride at Centrio Mall to support their activities and also witnessed the announcing of the winners of the Earth Hour Recycled Lantern Making Contest at Seda Hotel. It was my first time to witness these events during Earth Hour.

The experience was great. I got to know different people and organizations who are advocates of the environment during the Habagat Earth Hour Night Ride from the local, national and international scene. As for the Earth Hour Recycled Lantern Making Contest, being able to witness those beautiful lantern creations from trash was both educational and inspiring.

Some may say turning the lights off for one hour doesn’t make a difference since we do that every night when we go to sleep and even more, but Earth Hour is more than just turning off the lights. It is a movement that creates global awareness that people should take care of Mother Earth and be aware of environmental issues. Turning off the light for an hour symbolizes as our commitment to Mother Earth. We only have one planet to live in and we, the inhabitants, should take care of it.
